Ingredients

  • 2 large onions peeled and sliced thinly
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour or whole wheat for a healthier option
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or your preferred frying oil

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon for mixing
  • Deep skillet or frying pan
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels for draining
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and chopping board

Method

  1. Prepare the onions: Slice the onions thinly and soak them in cold water for about 10 minutes to reduce their sharpness. Drain well.
  2. Make the batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Add the egg and milk, whisking until smooth.
  3. Combine onions with batter: Add the drained onions to the batter, stirring until the onions are well coated.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour the vegetable oil into a deep skillet, filling it about 2 inches high. Heat the oil over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry the fritters: Once the oil is hot (test by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil it should sizzle immediately), carefully drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil. Fry the fritters in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  6. Drain and serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Oil Temperature: Make sure your oil is hot enough, or the fritters will be soggy. A thermometer should read around 350°F (175°C).
For Crispy Fritters: Don't overcrowd the pan. Frying in small batches helps the fritters crisp up perfectly.
Make Ahead: You can prep the batter ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 4 hours. However, frying them fresh will yield the best texture.
Customization: Feel free to add herbs like parsley or thyme to the batter for extra flavor, or try adding cheese for a creamy twist.
