Ingredients

  • 6-8 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well
  • 1/2 cup Splenda Granulated Sweetener
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg optional
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour for variation
  • 1/4 cup cold butter cut into small cubes
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional

Equipment

  • 9x9-inch baking dish (or similar size)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel and slice the apples, placing them in a large mixing bowl. Toss with lemon juice, Splenda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, and a pinch of salt. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it forms a crumbly texture. Stir in the chopped nuts if desired.
  4. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • If you prefer a sweeter crisp, feel free to adjust the amount of Splenda to your taste.
  • For extra flavour, try adding a few tablespoons of sugar-free caramel sauce over the apple layer before topping it.
  • This recipe is easily adaptable for different fruits, such as pears or berries, to create unique variations.
