Ingredients

  • 2 large apples preferably tart, like Granny Smith
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Strainer (optional, for a smoother syrup)

Method

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks.
  2. Cook the Apples: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and cook for 5-7 minutes, until the apples are soft and beginning to break down.
  3. Simmer the Syrup: Add water to the mixture and bring to a simmer. Let it cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are fully softened and the syrup has thickened.
  4. Blend (Optional): If you prefer a smoother syrup, use a blender or immersion blender to blend the mixture until smooth. If you like a chunkier texture, leave it as is.
  5. Strain (Optional): For an extra smooth syrup, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the apple solids.
  6. Finish: Stir in the vanilla extract and cook for another 2 minutes. Taste and adjust the sweetness, adding more sugar if needed.
  7. Serve: Allow the syrup to cool slightly before serving over pancakes, waffles, or your favorite dessert.
