Ingredients

  • 6-8 medium-sized apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch optional, for thickening
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar for sprinkling on top

Equipment

  • Large pot or skillet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Spoon for assembling
  • Lid to cover the pot or skillet

Method

  1. Prepare the apples: In a large pot or skillet, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water. Simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes until the apples are tender but hold their shape. If desired, add cornstarch to thicken the mixture.
  2. Make the biscuit topping: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk to form a dough.
  3. Assemble the grunt: Spoon dollops of the biscuit dough over the cooked apples. Sprinkle sugar on top for a touch of sweetness. Cover the pot or skillet and reduce heat to low. Cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuit topping is golden and cooked through.
  4. Serve: Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Customization: You can substitute apples with pears or berries for different flavors.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat before serving.
  • Toppings: For extra richness, drizzle with caramel sauce or sprinkle with toasted nuts.
