In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and mashed bananas.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, alternating with milk, mixing just until combined.
Fold in optional nuts or chocolate chips if desired.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
