Ingredients

  • 4 cups of fresh blackberries or frozen blackberries, thawed
  • 3 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 packet of fruit pectin for setting the jam
  • ½ cup of water

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Potato masher or fork (for mashing berries)
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sterilized jars with lids
  • Small plate (for testing consistency)
  • Ladle

Method

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Wash the blackberries thoroughly and mash them using a potato masher or fork until you reach a chunky consistency.
  2. Cook the Jam: Combine the mashed blackberries, sugar, and water in a large pot. Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Add Pectin: Once the mixture is boiling, add the fruit pectin and lemon juice. Stir until the pectin dissolves, and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing it to thicken.
  4. Test the Consistency: Drop a small spoonful of jam on a cold plate and let it sit for a few seconds. If it wrinkles and holds its shape, it’s ready. If not, continue cooking for a few more minutes.
  5. Jar the Jam: Once the jam reaches the desired consistency, pour it into sterilized jars, leaving about ¼ inch at the top. Seal with lids and allow the jars to cool completely.

Notes

  • Storage: Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
  • Consistency: Adjust cooking time if your jam is too runny—allow it to cook a little longer.
  • Berry Substitutions: You can substitute blackberries with other berries, like blueberries or raspberries, if desired.
  • Sterilizing Jars: Be sure to sterilize your jars before filling them to prevent spoilage. Simply boil the jars for 10 minutes and let them dry.
