Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ –½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional, for heat
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional, for a smoother sauce)
  • Blender or immersion blender (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Combine ingredients: Add the blackberries, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, and all seasonings to a medium saucepan. Stir to combine.
  2. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down and the sauce thickens.
  3. Blend (optional): For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to puree the sauce directly in the pot, or transfer it carefully to a blender.
  4. Strain (optional): If you prefer a seedless sauce, pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer, pressing with a spoon to extract all the liquid.
  5. Adjust and cool: Taste and adjust sweetness, smokiness, or heat as desired. Let the sauce cool before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
  • For a deeper smoky flavor, add ½ teaspoon of liquid smoke.
  • Use frozen blackberries with no changes to the recipe.
  • This sauce works beautifully on grilled chicken, ribs, pork tenderloin, burgers—even as a dip for fries.
  • If you want a thicker sauce, simmer for an additional 5–10 minutes.
