Ingredients

  • 1 package of puff pastry or strudel dough store-bought or homemade
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon optional
  • 1 tsp lemon zest optional
  • 2 tbsp butter melted
  • Powdered sugar for dusting, optional

Equipment

  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Brush for butter
  • Medium-sized mixing bowl
  • Oven

Method

  1. Prepare the Blackberry Filling: In a medium-sized bowl, combine fresh blackberries, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest. Gently mix and let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the juices to release from the berries.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Roll out the puff pastry or strudel dough on a flat surface to form a thin rectangle.
  3. Assemble the Strudel: Spoon the blackberry filling evenly along the center of the dough. Fold the sides in slightly and roll the dough tightly, sealing the edges.
  4. Brush with Butter: Brush the top of the rolled strudel with melted butter to ensure it turns golden and crisp while baking.
  5. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the strudel on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
  6. Serve: Allow the strudel to cool slightly before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness if desired.

Notes

  • Pastry Alternatives: You can use whole wheat or oat-based pastry for a healthier version.
  • Add-ins: For added flavor, try incorporating nuts like walnuts or almonds or a few tablespoons of dark chocolate chips.
  • Storage: Store leftover strudel in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven for 10 minutes at 350°F (175°C) to retain its crispiness.
  • Vegan Option: Use vegan butter and puff pastry to make this a completely plant-based treat.
