Ingredients

  • 1 shot of espresso or ¼ cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 cup of milk whole, skim, or plant-based milk like almond or oat
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • Optional: cinnamon or nutmeg for garnish

Equipment

  • Espresso machine or Moka pot (for brewing coffee)
  • Milk frother or steam wand (or a small saucepan for heating milk)
  • Small saucepan (for making brown sugar syrup)
  • Mug
  • Spoon for stirring

Method

  1. Make the Brown Sugar Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the brown sugar and water. Heat over medium heat while stirring, allowing the sugar to dissolve completely. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, then remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. Brew the Espresso: Brew one shot of espresso using an espresso machine or a Moka pot. Alternatively, use strong brewed coffee for a similar flavour. Pour the espresso into your favourite mug.
  3. Steam the Milk: Use a milk frother or steam wand to froth the milk until it’s smooth and creamy, with small bubbles. If you don’t have a frother, heat the milk in a small saucepan on the stove and whisk it to create a frothy texture.
  4. Combine the Ingredients: Add 2-3 tablespoons of the homemade brown sugar syrup to the espresso. Stir to combine. Then pour the steamed milk into the mug, mixing the syrup and espresso together. Stir gently to ensure it’s well combined.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Optionally, sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top of your latte for extra flavour. Enjoy your homemade brown sugar latte!

Notes

  • Adjusting Sweetness: You can add more or less brown sugar syrup depending on your sweetness preference.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Swap out regular milk for any plant-based milk like almond, oat, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Milk Texture: If you don't have a milk frother, you can heat the milk and shake it in a jar to create frothy milk.
  • Spices: Add a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla extract to your syrup for a spiced version of the brown sugar latte.
