Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef (lean preferred)
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 1 can 15 oz baked beans, slightly drained
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce smoky, spicy, or sweet—your choice
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika optional, for extra flavor
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 –8 sandwich buns hamburger or kaiser rolls
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or cheese slices
  • Optional toppings: pickles coleslaw, or jalapeños

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Toaster or oven (for buns)

Method

  1. Brown the beef: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add veggies: Stir in chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Build the sauce: Add baked beans, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir well.
  4. Simmer: Let the mixture cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Assemble: Toast buns lightly. Spoon filling onto each bun, top with cheddar cheese, and add desired toppings.
  6. Serve: Enjoy warm with fries, coleslaw, or a simple salad.

Notes

  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • For a vegetarian option, replace meat with lentils or plant-based crumbles.
  • Use different cheese varieties like pepper jack for spice or mozzarella for a milder flavor.
  • Make ahead: Store the beef mixture separately and assemble sandwiches just before serving.
  • Freezer-friendly: Freeze the cooked filling for up to 2 months.
