Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs preferably plain or seasoned
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme optional
  • ¼ cup ketchup for topping

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking pan or loaf pan
  • Spoon or hands for mixing
  • Meat thermometer (optional but recommended)

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Mix gently to combine, avoiding overmixing.
  3. Shape and Bake: Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and form it into a loaf shape. Spread a thin layer of ketchup over the top. Bake for about 1 hour, or until the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C).
  4. Rest the Meatloaf: Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Slice the meatloaf and serve with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • Meat Choice: For a juicier meatloaf, use ground beef with about 80% lean meat and 20% fat. You can also mix in some pork for extra flavor.
  • Customization: Feel free to add in vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms for added flavor and moisture.
  • Alternative Sauces: Swap out ketchup for BBQ sauce or a glaze of your choice for a unique twist.
  • Storage: Leftover meatloaf can be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 days and is great for sandwiches or reheated as a meal.
