Ingredients

  • cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Additional sugar for sprinkling optional

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric Mixer or Hand Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spoon or cookie scoop
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Add Egg and Vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until fully combined.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  6. Form Cookies: Roll the dough into small balls (about 1 inch in size) and place them onto the prepared baking sheet. Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers. Optionally, sprinkle sugar on top.
  7. Bake: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are slightly soft.
  8. Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
